I spent twenty-six years as a flight attendant and I did not wear sunscreen on most of those flights. I want that on the record before I tell you anything else, because I am not going to pretend I always knew better. I did not. I had a drawer of creams and a bad habit, and the sun did what it does.

Then at fifty-nine I went for a routine skin check in Fort Lauderdale, nothing found, and the dermatologist said one sentence about daily SPF that stuck. Two years and change later, CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30 is the longest-running product on my vanity. Longer than the retinol capsules. Longer than the vitamin C serum I actually like. So when I say daily SPF is the best anti-aging step I have taken, I am telling you what happened to my own face, not repeating a label.

The step I have not skipped in two years

A face lotion with broad spectrum SPF 30 built in, oil free, unscented. One pump in the morning, face and neck, and the sunscreen question is already answered.

Ten reasons, in the order I actually noticed them

1

It prevents the damage instead of repairing it later

Every other step on my vanity is a repair job. The retinol at night smooths what is already there. The vitamin C fades what is already there. CeraVe AM with SPF 30 is the only thing I do that tries to stop the next spot from forming in the first place. That ordering matters to me now in a way it simply did not at forty. Prevention first, repair second, and I had the two reversed for twenty years.

My cheekbone sunspots stopped getting darker

I have two spots on my left cheekbone that showed up in my forties and got steadily deeper every summer after. Two years of daily sunscreen and they stopped deepening. They are still there. I want to be clear about that, since I have read enough articles that promise otherwise. The vitamin C has softened them a bit. But the annual darkening, the thing that made them worse every July, that stopped.

SPF 30 covers the walk from the car to the produce aisle

I am not on a boat. My sun exposure is a parking lot, the walk to the beach access, twenty minutes pulling weeds by the hedge. The label says broad spectrum SPF 30, UVA and UVB, and that fits the shape of my actual life. On a full beach day I want more and I reapply. For a Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, thirty is the number I need and the number I use.

4

It is a lotion first and a sunscreen second

This is the reason I did not quit, and quitting is my default. Most sunscreens I tried felt like a mask and I would wash them off by lunch. CeraVe AM is a face moisturizer with the sunscreen built into it, oil free, and it sinks in. There is a slight white cast for a few minutes after I apply it. It fades. I have learned to do my neck while I wait for it.

The niacinamide calms my cheeks while the sunscreen works

My cheeks go red if I look at them wrong. The niacinamide in this formula is there to help calm skin, and the hyaluronic acid holds moisture, so my sunscreen step quietly became my hydration step too. I noticed the redness settling maybe six weeks in. Not gone. Calmer. That was a bonus I did not expect from something I bought for the SPF.

The sunspots are still there. But the annual darkening, the thing that made them worse every single July, that stopped. Nothing else on my vanity did that.

One pump replaced two bottles on a small vanity

My bathroom counter is not large and neither is my patience at seven in the morning. I used to keep a moisturizer and a separate sunscreen, and when I was rushed I would skip one of them, usually the sunscreen. CeraVe AM is both in one 3 ounce pump bottle. One pump, face and neck, done. The step I actually do is the step that is easy to do.

The ceramides keep my dry patches from flaking

Combination-dry is the polite phrase for it. What it means in practice is an oily forehead and patches beside my nose that flake under foundation by February. CeraVe builds its formulas around three ceramides, ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II, to help restore and maintain the skin barrier, and that is the part I feel by two in the afternoon. My nose is not flaking this winter. That used to be automatic.

Unscented means it does not fight my vitamin C

Fragrance is the fastest way to make my cheeks angry, and I learned that the expensive way. CeraVe AM is unscented, so it sits on top of my TruSkin vitamin C serum without an argument. Four drops of serum, three minutes to settle, one pump of this. That is my whole morning now. It took me two years to accept that the boring version was the one that worked.

Reapplying at midday takes less than a minute

The label says not water resistant. I read that as an instruction rather than a flaw. On garden days and beach days I reapply at midday from the bottle I keep in my front door bag. Face, neck, backs of my hands. It goes over makeup with a light press rather than a rub. Is it perfect? No. Is it part of why I stopped coming home pink? Yes, and I will take it.

Two years in, it is the only step I have never abandoned

I have quit retinol twice over the flaking. I have quit vitamin C once when a bottle turned dark orange in the Florida heat. I have never quit this one. It lives at the vanity and in my front door bag, two bottles at a time, and the habit outlasted every enthusiastic purchase I made before it. Some products survive on novelty. This one survived on being unremarkable, and unremarkable is what shows up in the mirror.

What I'd Skip

I would skip applying it five minutes before you need to leave the house. The white cast is real for those first few minutes, and if your skin tone is deeper than mine it will read more strongly than you want before an event. Do your makeup after it settles, not over the top of it. I would also skip expecting this, or any sunscreen, to lift a jawline. It does not. Nothing I have used topically does that, and I say that as a woman with a drawer full of hopeful tubes to prove it. Skin varies person to person, and if something on your face worries you, a dermatologist is the right call, not an article by a retired flight attendant.

Start the one step that outlasts all the others

Broad spectrum SPF 30, niacinamide and three ceramides in a single oil free pump. Two years in, it is still the last thing I do before I leave the house.
